Pantanal Jaguar Tours: Boat Safaris in the North or Caiman in the South?

Pantanal jaguar tours are the most reliable way on Earth to see a wild jaguar, and the Pantanal offers two very different ways to do it. The world’s largest tropical wetland (over 210,000 km²) holds the densest jaguar population anywhere, and a jaguar safari here is built around the animal: boats in the north, 4×4 vehicles in the south.

In the Northern Pantanal, jaguar watching happens by boat around Porto Jofre and the Meeting of Waters State Park, where the cats hunt along the Cuiabá, Piquiri and São Lourenço rivers in daylight. Reached via Cuiabá and the 147 km Transpantaneira Road, this is where sightings climb above 90% in the dry season. Our jaguar safari in Porto Jofre and dedicated photography departures run full days on the water from riverside lodges and a floating hotel.

The Southern Pantanal works differently. Jaguars are far harder to find there, with one exception: Caiman, a 53,000-hectare private reserve near Miranda. Through its partnership with the Onçafari Project, the jaguars have been habituated to safari vehicles over years of conservation work, giving a reported 98% sighting rate on land-based 4×4 safaris. Our Luxury Jaguar Safari at Caiman pairs that with some of the best lodging in Brazil.

So which fits you? Choose the north for the highest density and classic riverboat safaris, or Caiman in the south for near-guaranteed sightings, land safaris, and full luxury. Either way, plan for the dry season (May to October, peak July to October) and 4 to 6 days.

Tell us your priority and budget, and we will match you to the right Pantanal jaguar tours!
