7 Nights·8 Days

Overview

Designed at an easygoing pace, this 8-day Galápagos family tour suits children, parents, and grandparents alike. Guests stay in cozy, family-run hotels across Quito, Puerto Ayora, and Puerto Villamil. All flights and transfers between the islands are completely covered, with every outing led by an English-speaking naturalist guide licensed by the park.

The journey combines light trekking, coastal paddling, and snorkeling to bring you face-to-face with wild giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea turtles, and Galápagos penguins. Excursions lead into the Santa Cruz highlands to view the twin pit craters of Los Gemelos and the giant tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Station. Moving on to Isabela Island, you will hike near the rim of the Sierra Negra volcano and explore the clear, shallow channels of Los Túneles.

Morning activities leave afternoons wide open, so younger travelers and adults can rest or explore without feeling rushed. Use your free time to unwind beside the pool, wander along white-sand beaches, or take in the island atmosphere at a relaxed rhythm. It is a seamless way for every generation to discover the magic of the archipelago together!

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Quito / Welcome Dinner and Briefing

  • Arrivein Quito (UIO) at any time · Hotel near the airport
  • Welcome dinner+ Trip briefing · ~6 PM
  • OvernightQuito

Your Galápagos family tour starts on the mainland. Land in Quito whenever suits you and check in at a family-run hacienda close to the airport, set on a private reserve with gardens, walking trails, and hummingbirds. If you land early, there is time for a walk on the grounds or, as an extra, a guided tour of Quito with a local guide.

Quito sits at about 2,750 m (9,000 ft), so take the first hours easy. Around 6 PM, a member of the local team meets you at the hotel for a welcome dinner and a briefing on the week ahead.

Meals included: Dinner

Lush hotel courtyard garden in Quito with a shaded outdoor dining table, stone fountain, flowering plants, and tile-roofed bungalows — a welcoming first stop on a galapagos family tour
A small blue bird with a vivid red eye perches on a rust-colored branch during a Galápagos family tour outing
Warm-toned wooden hacienda lodge with open verandas, flower gardens, and stone pathways, the starting point for a galapagos family tour based on the Ecuadorian mainland

A morning flight takes you to Baltra, the small island off Santa Cruz that holds the main airport. Pay the National Park fee in cash (US$ 200), collect your bags, and meet your guide outside. The first stop comes before the hotel, so keep closed shoes and a rain jacket in your hand luggage.

In the green highlands, look into Los Gemelos—two pit craters left when underground magma chambers collapsed. Then comes a private reserve where giant tortoises wander, graze, and cool off in mud pools, and a walk through a lava tunnel.

After lunch at the ranch, drive down to Puerto Ayora, the busiest town in the islands, for a short walk with your guide and tips for dinner.

Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch

Illuminated lava cave interior with golden and teal-lit volcanic rock walls reflected perfectly in a still underground pool, a highlight of any galapagos family tour
A large wild tortoise walking through green grass and lush vegetation on a galapagos family tour excursion in the Santa Cruz highlands

After lunch in town, the Charles Darwin Research Station shows how scientists brought back land iguanas and several giant tortoise species, from collecting eggs to releasing young tortoises into the wild.

North Seymour is about 40 minutes by boat, a day of around 7 hours with a walk among nesting blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and land iguanas, plus a snorkel. Bartolomé is about 2 hours by boat each way: you climb to the viewpoint over Pinnacle Rock and snorkel from the beach, often near sea lions, turtles, and sometimes Galápagos penguins.

  • Highland birds: vermilion flycatcher and, with luck, the short-eared owl
  • Free afternoonin Puerto Villamil

The sixth day of your Galápagos family tour starts with a hike to the Sierra Negra volcano, one of the most active in the archipelago (last erupted in 2018). A 45-minute uphill trek from the park checkpoint leads to the rim. From there, the path levels out into a broad, easy walk with several scenic stops along the way. At the top, the caldera opens out about 9 km (5.6 mi) across.

Back in town, the afternoon is free. Spend the rest of your day relaxing on the long sandy beach of Puerto Villamil, renting a bike to cycle the coastal path, or arranging a surf lesson with a local instructor. You can also take a gentle walk into the village center for a cold drink or local gelato.

  • Snorkelat Los Túneles · 1 to 1.5 h in calm, shallow water
  • Dinnerwith the group in Isabela

At Los Túneles (Cabo Rosa), ancient lava flows met the ocean to create a network of tunnels, arches, and sheltered pools. Renowned as one of the archipelago’s best snorkeling spots, it offers sightings of feeding sea turtles, resting sharks beneath rocky ledges, rays, seahorses, and blue-footed boobies nesting overhead. All necessary gear (masks, fins, and wetsuits) is provided.

Board by the ladder and cross a short stretch of lava rock. Access depends on the tide; if the sea is too rough, the captain picks another snorkel site with similar life. Enjoy a free afternoon to relax, followed by an included group dinner to finish the day.

FAQ

Reviews

“This was absolutely the trip of a lifetime! We booked a private tour for our family of 6 - mom, dad, grandma, and three kids ages 7, 10 and 12. From the moment we arrived we were completely taken care of. With three kids we didn't have to worry about getting from one point to another. But more importantly, we were shown the most extraordinary places and wildlife. We hiked a volcano, surfed, and snorkeled with sharks and giant sea turtles and sea lions! Our guide Pablo was so caring and related to everyone in our group so well. He made changes as needed in the itinerary to give us the best experience every day. And he taught us so much. He truly loves these islands and the plants and animals who live there, and his enthusiasm and curiosity were infectious. We felt like we were being let into a secret garden that only Pablo knew about. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer! There is so much to see and do.”
