Day 1

Arrival / First Hike in the Amazon

  • ArrivalAlta Floresta Airport (AFL) · check-in ~3 PM
  • Boat transferCristalino River to the lodge
  • Optional short hikeeasy warm-up trail · first birds

Departure from Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso: PlanetaEXO’s local partner will pick up at the airport. Schedules are flexible and coordinated according to your flight/preferences. Since the lodge sits in a remote, exclusive stretch of the Amazon, the final leg is a boat ride up the Cristalino River. Estimated arrival at 3 PM.

Upon arrival, settle in, rest after the journey, and get to know Cristalino Jungle Lodge’s facilities. If you are up for it, a short, easy trail lets you start looking for birds on day one. In the evening, dinner is followed by a drink at the bar and the lodge’s floating deck, where a bonfire is lit as night falls over the river.

Day 2

Dr. Haffer Birding Trail / Canoeing

  • Dr. Haffer Trail3-4 hrs · low difficulty · pre-dawn start
  • Afternoon canoeingCristalino River

Birdwatching in the Amazon Rainforest means an early start, and activities kick off before dawn as the birds come to life. With guides who know the area intimately, you walk the Dr. Haffer Trail—named after the German ornithologist Jürgen Haffer and his theory of Amazonian forest refugia during the Pleistocene epoch.

The walk runs 3 to 4 hours on a low-difficulty trail, with a chance at seeing species such as the Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata), Tapajós Fire-eye (Pyriglena similis), Rufous-capped Nunlet (Nonnula ruficapilla), Striated Antbird (Drymophila devillei), and Dusky-cheeked Foliage-gleaner (Anabazenops dorsalis).

After lunch and a rest, the afternoon brings canoeing on the Cristalino River, then dinner on the external deck with the sounds of the forest after dark.

Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Manakin Birding Trail / Canoeing or Boat

  • Manakin Trail4+ hrs · reached by boat
  • Afternoon on the watercanoe or boat · Teles Pires River

The third day starts on the Manakin Trail, named for the White-crowned Manakin (Pseudopipra pipra). It is reachable only by water, so a short boat ride takes you near a lake to start.

Guests usually spend over 4 hours here, with sightings that can include the Bronzy Jacamar (Galbula leucogastra), Brown-banded Puffbird (Notharchus ordii), and the Cryptic Forest Falcon (Micrastur mintoni).

After lunch, choose canoeing again or a relaxed boat trip on the Teles Pires River, keeping watch for more birds and other Amazonian wildlife: tapirs, deer, ocelots, and native fish such as Brazilian tiger fish, redtail catfish, and piraíba catfish. The evening is yours, with dinner and a drink at the bar.

Talk to the guides about which to walk (Sierra Trail I, Cocoa Sierra Trail, Sierra Trail II, and the Valley Trail).

Back at the lodge for lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to birding on the Ariosto Island Trail, set on a 567-hectare island in the middle of the Teles Pires River and home to species such as the Amazonian Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus ornatus). Watching the sunset over the river from the island closes the day.
