Overview

This 5-day Pantanal-Bonito tour joins two of Brazil’s best nature destinations in one trip out of Campo Grande. It opens in the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland, where open floodplains put wildlife in plain sight instead of hiding it behind forests. You get two nights at a local lodge, with safaris scheduled early and late in the day when animals are most active.

The trip then crosses into Bonito, the country’s ecotourism capital. Two nights there cover São Miguel Cave in the Anhumas Valley and snorkeling at the Barra do Sucuri, one of the clearest rivers on Earth, where you drift downstream past fish and submerged plants.

Pairing the Pantanal and Bonito in Brazil adds a second biome and a completely different kind of water, and the road transfer between them doubles as a lesson in how fast the landscape changes. Private transfers, a bilingual local guide, and full board in the Pantanal are included throughout.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Arrival in Campo Grande / Transfer to the Pantanal / Evening Safari

The tour begins in Campo Grande, capital of Mato Grosso do Sul. A private transfer takes you to your lodge in the Pantanal, and the drive is already part of the trip: caimans on the verges, capybaras in the ditches, and birds on every fence post. Departure time follows your flight, so the day is shaped by when you land.

Arrive early and you can join a first activity, a boat trip, a horseback ride, or a jeep safari. Arrive later, and dinner at the lodge is followed by an evening safari. Either way, the night drive is worth staying up for, since much of what lives here only shows itself after dark.

Day 2:

Morning Boat Trip / Afternoon Horseback Ride

After breakfast, the day goes deeper into the wetland. A quiet morning boat trip along hidden channels is the best wildlife window of the trip: giant otters fish these waters, anacondas sun themselves on the banks, and the region counts over 600 bird species.

The afternoon horseback ride crosses open fields, which is how the Pantanal has been worked for two centuries and still the best way to cover ground quietly. The evening is free before dinner.

Day 3:

Jeep Safari / Transfer to Bonito

One last Pantanal outing after breakfast: a jeep safari for fauna and flora, then lunch. The road to Bonito follows, and the 4- to 5-hour drive is a slow reveal of how Brazil changes: flooded plains give way to dry Cerrado, and the horizon lifts.

After check-in, the evening is yours in Bonito’s town center, which is small, walkable, and full of restaurants, cafes, and craft stores.

Day 4:

São Miguel Cave / Snorkeling at Barra do Sucuri

A transfer takes you into the Anhumas Valley Ecological Park for São Miguel Cave. Walk across a 180-meter suspension bridge and a forest trail to the cave itself, one of the oldest dry caves in Brazil, with limestone formations that took millions of years to build.

The afternoon is the trip’s signature. Wondering what the snorkeling in Bonito, Brazil actually involves? At the Barra do Sucuri, you ride a boat upstream, then drift back down. The water is clear enough that it reads as an aquarium rather than a river—look past the two obvious large species, and you will find many more!

Afterwards, enjoy some time by the Formoso River and a free evening.

Day 5:

Free Morning in Bonito / Return to Campo Grande

The last morning is yours. You can add an optional activity, visit a nearby waterfall and river, or simply rest. Departure from Bonito is flexible, and a private transfer returns you to Campo Grande (roughly 3h15 on the road) in time for an onward flight.

“Our trip was very well organized with a top guide Bruno, who was really very helpfull for us doing bird fotography. Bruno knew an awfull lot about the flora and fauna. The driver Fabrício was a very punctual, skilled and safe driver. He too looked along the road for us to view birds and other animals. We stayed in fazenda Pequi, which is a beuatifull farm and guesthouse. Very well structured and in the middle of nature close to Miranda. Food and rooms all superb. At Pequi we saw a lot of birds however mammals an reptiles were not present in abundance. Most of all, the people from Pantal area are very kind we enjoyed their hospitality. From fazemda Pequi you can arrange several tours, choose as you like! We also stayed in Bonito. The travel day is actually a lost day. Instead of waiting we organized a trip to the Arara cave but unfortunately it started to rain and the birds stayed at home... In Bonito we went to a cave and swum in the cristal clear river. The cave was for us not very interesting since we had seen more of this. The swimming or drifting in the river was very beautifull. If you look carefull you will see that there are more species of fish than the two large types. We met people who didn't think it was worth the money but they didn't see the beauty of nature because they were not used to look at the right things.in Bonito you find lots of restaurants and shops. Not really our point of interest. I visited Pantanal 35 years ago and I was confronted with the effects of climate change and agro toxic compounds. This was a shock to witness. Nevertheless the trip is still very valuable. Next time I personally would start deep in the Pantanal area.”

“We took a trip to the Pantanal and Bonito organized by the agency and overall we had a very good experience. The first part of the trip was at Jungle Lodge in Miranda, which was excellent. The accommodation was great and the service was truly exceptional. All the staff were very attentive — from the guide to the reception team and everyone working at the lodge. The tours were also very well organized and provided an amazing experience in the Pantanal. On the first day there was a small miscommunication regarding some activities that were included in the package, such as the horseback ride. This initially made us a bit concerned, but once we contacted the agency they responded immediately and resolved the situation very quickly. In the end we were able to do all the planned activities, which showed great responsiveness from their side. The second part of the trip was in Bonito, where we did excursions such as Rio Sucuri and Estância Mimosa, both excellent and very well organized. The nature experiences there were truly incredible. The only aspect that could be improved was the hotel chosen in Bonito. We encountered some maintenance issues, such as water leaks in both the bathroom and the room, and the towels were not completely clean when we arrived. The food was also not great and the hotel was located a bit far from the town center. Another point is that we ended up having only one full day in Bonito. While talking with guides during the excursions, we learned that there are many other great attractions in the region. Since we had flexibility in our schedule, it might have been nice to spend more time there. Despite these points, the agency’s support throughout the trip was very good. Whenever we needed help, we received quick responses. We would also like to highlight the excellent work of the drivers, especially Wagner and Joel, who were very professional and kind. Overall, it was a very special and well-organized trip with incredible nature experiences.”
