5-Day Atacama Tour: Stargazing, Geysers, and Lickanantay Culture

Atacama
4 Nights·5 Days

Overview

Discover the dramatic landscapes of northern Chile on an extraordinary 5-day Atacama tour! Renowned as the driest desert on Earth, it displays an incredible geography carved by centuries of natural forces. Under some of the clearest skies in the hemisphere, you will join a stargazing outing on your first evening, learning to locate constellations alongside an astronomy specialist.

The adventure brings you close to the Atacama Desert’s wonders, beginning with sunset in Moon Valley across the salt range. You will journey to the high-altitude Altiplano to take in the crimson formations of Piedras Rojas and the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons. Rise early to watch steam plumes ascend at the El Tatio geysers at dawn, followed by visits to the Putana wetlands, Machuca village, and Cactus Valley. At the Turikunza Experience, a community-based tourism project, a local Lickanantay family will showcase traditional recipes, pottery techniques, and walks with llamas through the ayllu.

Your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama provides a single base for all 4 nights, so you can explore without repacking your bags every morning. Return each afternoon to comfortable rooms, an outdoor pool, and amenities within easy walking distance of the town center. This setup lets you enjoy thrilling desert excursions by day and relax in total comfort each evening.

  • Full itinerary: a stargazing night, the Turikunza Experience, Moon Valley at sunset, Piedras Rojas and the altiplanic lagoons, and El Tatio with the Putana wetlands, Machuca, and Cactus Valley.
  • An Atacama Desert stargazing tour on your first night: 2.5 to 3 hours of constellations and an astronomy talk, with a cocktail.
  • A hands-on half day with a Lickanantay family at the Turikunza Experience: desert herbs and tastings, a pottery class, and a walk with llamas.
  • Activities guided by bilingual local guides, in small groups of up to 9 guests.

  • All-inclusive experience: shared airport transfers from Calama, 4 nights in San Pedro with breakfast, 5 guided excursions with their entrance fees, and the meals on tour.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Calama / Transfer to San Pedro de Atacama / Stargazing Tour

  • ArrivalCalama Airport (CJC) · Shared transfer to San Pedro de Atacama
  • Stargazing tour2.5–3h · 2,450 m (8,038 ft) · Group of up to 20

Your 5-day Atacama tour starts at Calama Airport, where a shared vehicle takes you to San Pedro de Atacama. The transfer waits for the other guests on nearby flights, so allow up to 40 minutes at the airport.

In the evening, join the stargazing tour, “Under the Night Sky of Atacama.” A local specialist introduces seasonal constellations visible to the naked eye so you can identify them at home. On full-moon nights, the excursion shifts to moon-gazing, while cloudy skies move the tour to another evening during your stay. Check the moon calendar when booking.

The morning belongs to the Turikunza Experience, a community-based tourism and cultural immersion project created by the Indigenous Lickanantay (Atacameño) people to recover and share their ancestral knowledge. A local family runs this circuit for the five senses. You learn the desert plants and their uses, welcomed with local infusions and incense, and taste fermented drinks, medicinal macerates, syrups, seeds, fruits, and a carob dessert.

Then you get your hands in the clay. The pottery class honors the local potter Isidora Ayavire—how the clay is chosen and matured, the traditional tools, and your own piece. The visit ends with a walk through the ayllu (the community’s land) with llamas and the story of the Lickanantay and the llama.

After the visit, you return to your hotel, and lunch is on your own in San Pedro. In the afternoon, drive to the Moon Valley in Chile’s Cordillera de la Sal, taking in the Great Dune, the Amphitheater, the old Victoria Mine, and the Tres Marías rock formations. End at Ckari Viewpoint, where the desert turns gold and red at sunset.

“Super 3 days with our guide Claudio! The agency gave us 5-star service! Our guide showed us magical places while always giving us relevant explanations! Thank you! And what can I say about the breakfasts, 5-to-7s and lunch in a luxury version with homemade small dishes and local wine! Simply wow! Don't hesitate!”

— Alain

“We loved all the tours, and the team and guides were super lovely. It was a great experience, despite an atypical week of weather in the desert!! It was a special vacation and we'll be back to do the tours we missed with the team!”

— Bruna O

“We had booked multi day tours with them in July. Very professional & flexible from the beginning including crystal clear communication. We were in touch with the owner Paula herself who definitely went out of her way to ensure every detail was proactively shared with us. Our guide Leonardo or Leo was just absolutely fantastic ! Very nice to talk to and knowledgeable , he always made it a point to tweak the itinerary a bit to better suit our travel style and even suggested & took us to a remote breathtaking location - what we consider as one of the major highlights of our Atacama trip. Would highly recommend them for tours around Atacama. Thank you, Team ! It was wonderful to tour with you.”

— Abhirup C

“The visit to the Atacama desert, the Valle de la Luna, the Tatio Geysers and Piedras Rojas was incredible. Besides the breathtaking scenery, the tours were enriched by the preparation and passion of the two guides, Jonathan and Nicolás.”

— Giovanni Del Pelo

“I'm Brazilian and I couldn't have had a better experience! The main point I highlight from the trip was our guide Javier, who was extremely attentive, kind, always on time, in very high spirits, and with a huge knowledge of the area. We did practically all the tours with Javier and I believe this greatly enhanced the quality of the trip, and the connection with the culture, history and scenery of San Pedro de Atacama. The food was very good, whether at breakfasts, lunches or afternoon snacks. We were treated very well and we will definitely be back!”

“I traveled with my husband and my two children, Loreto and Cristóbal, and from the very first moment the service was exceptional. I especially want to highlight Felipe and Paula, with whom I arranged everything via WhatsApp, and also Paulina the receptionist; their constant attention, kindness and willingness to help us coordinate every detail gave us enormous peace of mind traveling as a family. The hostel offers an ideal atmosphere to rest after the intense days of excursions, standing out for its comfort, cleanliness and the warmth of its staff. The tours operated by your agency are first-rate. We had the chance to visit marvelous places such as Laguna Chaxas, Piedras Rojas, the Altiplanic Lagoons, the Tatio Geysers and the Valle de la Luna. Each excursion was perfectly organized and tailored. A huge thank you to the guides, Diego and Javier, who showed their professionalism through their deep knowledge of the area, great punctuality and a great energy that let my children and us enjoy the desert to the fullest. 10 out of 10!!!”

— Mariela Bordones

“I did almost all the tours and everything was great! From the pre-trip guidance, including about acclimatization and the order of the tours, to the execution, the agency's space, information, etc. In particular, I want to thank the guides Diego, very fun and upbeat, and Javier, a very calm, kind, helpful person who is eager to share knowledge. I even did the Lascar and Licancabur treks with the guide Brian Cameron, a person with a lot of energy, helpful, who lent equipment and made sure everything went well. They were unforgettable experiences.”

— Renan A

“We booked all of our tours, which made the whole logistics of the trip much easier. In general, the tours with this agency are done in smaller groups (the most we had was a group of 4 people in total), which, in my opinion, makes the experience better. All the guides were incredible (Javier, Leonardo, Ronald and Christian), always giving very thorough explanations about the places we visited. In addition, the agency also always provided very prompt service, answered all the questions that came up and helped in every situation. Lastly, I'd like to give two special thanks: 1) To Javier, for the two tours he guided us on, for his friendliness and for helping us in a very special personal moment, and 2) To Christian, on the Cerro Toco trek, he was excellent and helped us a lot with the ascent/descent, it was an outstanding tour! I 100% recommend it”

— Pedro

“The agency gave us extraordinary moments in the Atacama desert. A very professional agency, attentive to every detail. The guides Javier and Leonardo accompanied us on all six days of tours, and words fall short to thank them for turning our trip into such a sensational experience.”
